More Info:
This album contains songs of the Kwakiutl people collected by Dr. Ida Halpern (1910-1987). Halpern, an Austrian-born Canadian musicologist, studied Native music from several tribes along the coast of British Columbia, including the Haida, Tlingit, Coastal Salish, Nootka, and Bella Coola. The liner notes for this album thoroughly discuss Dr. Halpern's methodology, and provide an analysis of the music and short biographies of the performers. Other recordings by Dr. Halpern include Indian Music of the Pacific Northwest Coast, Haida: Indian Music of the Pacific Northwest, and Nootka Indian Music of the Pacific North West Coast.
